Artificial Intelligence in Supply Chain Management - Between Expectations and Reality

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in supply chain management (SCM) is becoming increasingly important, while at the same time the discrepancy between expectations and actual implementation is becoming more apparent. To investigate this issue, the Institute for Supply Chain Management (ISCM-HSG) at the University of St. Gallen, supported by its sponsoring association, is conducting a consortium study. The focus of the study is to analyze the current state of AI in SCM and to identify potential for improvement. One interesting aspect is the orientation of AI applications so far, which mainly focus on specific SCM processes, while cross-process AI suites are relatively rare but offer significant potential. To successfully drive this development, the study also addresses AI integration challenges such as data quality, integration issues, and sometimes unrealistic expectations. It provides SCM practitioners with sound insights and practical tools to overcome these hurdles and effectively use AI in SCM.
